Sewing Machines

Sewing Machines by Singer, JMB and Brother

Choosing a sewing machine may seem a bit daunting, so here are some features you should be aware of:

  • Are you a beginner or an advanced sewer / seamstress? Beginners are more likely to be happy with a basic machine with a limited range of stitches, whereas a more experienced seamstress may need more features.
  • A basic machine will be fine for dress making, curtains, repairs and alterations. However, if you want to do crafts or quilting you will need a machine with a large variety of stitches.

Different types of sewing machine include electronic (the most common type, which allows your hands to remain free to guide the fabric - look for a "free arm" which makes it easier to sew sleeve and the legs of trousers), computerised (for advanced sewers, you can create a virtually infinite number of different stitches and download designs from the internet via a PC) and overlockers, which are essentially finishing machines used for hems and seams. Overlockers sew the seam, finish the edge and remove the excess fabric all in one go, so they are great if all you want to do, for example, is make curtains. However, they do not have the range of stitches of a sewing machine and cannot make button holes or sew on zips.

There are many top brands on offer, including Singer, JMB and Brother. Extended service plans are also available, providing free repairs for up to four years.
